Hades Revisited is a game in development. The goal of this project is to create a deep and complex survival and terraforming game set on a far-away volcanic planet.

Currently, the game is mostly a sandbox game.

WORK IN PROGRESS

This game is in an development stage! This game is very incomplete, and only a preview.

  • Everything is experimental
  • Everything you see can be changed or removed in the future
  • There is no guarantee the game will ever be finished

The game is provided for those who want to follow early development of a game, just mess around and don’t care about bugs or breaking future changes.

Story

Due to a gross miscalculation of the gravitational pull of planet Hades, the latest terraforming attempt of your space crew went horribly wrong! You managed to survive, but it seems you are stranded on this hellhole of a planet full of lava, stone and ash for good!

You still have a pickaxe and a few apples. Also, water is hidden inside the tall and chaotic stone spires. So your only chance of survival is to search for water, use your crafting skills to form some soil and plant apple trees. More plants might follow. The underground holds great riches, but also great dangers, lava is death. With your new acquired resources, maybe, just maybe, you will turn planet Hades into a nice, habitable place.

But beware: Many were not so lucky: Mutants will haunt on the surface and who knows what dangers might hide in the deep underground?

There’s no goal in this game. There’s a strong focus on creativity, terraforming and digging. This game is very different from other games, it’s not for everyone.

Current features

Here’s a quick overview of the features currently in the game:

  • Unique volcanic terrain and underground
  • Many decorative volcano-themed blocks
  • Mutants and other basic monsters
  • Large selection of block shapes to create (columnia workstation)
  • Seasons: Spring, Summer and Fall
  • Grow plants and trees from seeds
  • Create new seeds with crafting
  • Lava is abundant, but water is rare
  • Ugly player skins (yay!)
  • Simulation world to play tutorial missions in (experimental; only available in Creative Mode)

Everything in this list is subject to change in future game releases.

Planned features

This is a very ambitious game project. The ultimate goal for this game project is to become a deep and complex terraforming game where the player has many different things to do.

This is the big game vision:

You’re a member of the Galactic Builders on a terraforming mission. You start in a spaceship hovering above the planet Hades. Here you can prepare your mission, can play training missions, get information or beam straight down to the planet.

Once you landed on the planet, your first goal is to survive and start the process of life. You are prepared thanks to your training. And the game will become more complex from there.

These are, roughly, the main gameplay concepts that are planned:

  • Exploration: The planet might be a wasteland, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth exploring. Exploration on the surface should grant the player with several unique items
  • Start from moss: Moss is the only plant that already grows naturally on the planet, and very rarely. From moss you can extract the first genetic material for research.
  • Doing research: This will be done by collecting a large number of samples (i.e. items) and putting them in a research station. Research gives you research points.
  • Discover new seeds: Spend research points to unlock new seeds
  • Grow plants: Start with primitive plants like moss and fern and progress through more and more “advanced” plants that grow valuable fruit
  • Mining: Mining will be another large focus, with a large variety of ores, different stone layers, unique structures and more and more dangers the deeper you go. Mining should be a rich and varied experience instead of just “dig down”
  • Technologies: You will progressively create more and more powerful tech to make your life easier. However, it is unreliable and needs a lot of fixing.
  • Terraforming: Early plants will be easy to grow, but plants further up the tree of evolution have more needs. You will need to terraform the planet: Create an atmosphere, manipulate heat and humidity, create entire biomes from scratch, etc. Very late in the game, the player may unlock powerful building tools to create or destroy large chunks of terrain quickly.
  • Trading: Trading with the rest of the Universe grants you access to more unique items you cannot craft yourself
  • Tourism: If your base is flourishing, you can invite tourists to your place. Tourists will live at your place for a while and have various needs. If you make them happy, they will give you nice rewards. Tourism is planned to give the player actually another reason to build. Decorative blocks also will have an indirect use as different tourists have different tastes
  • Training/Simulation: You can enter the simulation world at simulation terminals to perform training. This includes tutorial missions, maybe minigames and a monster battle. Simulation will be used to show various non-obvious game mechanics that don’t fit in a tooltip
  • Lore: While this is technically a sandbox game, a bit of lore/story is planned. Learn about the universe around you, special events, the reason why you landed here, more about the planet, etc.

As for the game’s style, it is planned to follow a 1970’s style technology. Humanity has mastered space travel, but information technology is super dated. Maybe the game will follow a style similar to old cheesy sci-fi movies.

Download and Installation

Please note: This game is a work in progress. Expect bugs, breakage, half-finished features and chaos.

This game requires Luanti version 5.10.0 or later. Download Luanti from www.luanti.org.

Recommended installation: In Luanti, download and install this game with the “Content” tab (see the Luanti documentation for details).

Alternatively, you can manually download this game from Codeberg.

Play

To start the game, start Luanti, select the game Hades Revisited, create a world and start playing.

Getting started

(Note: It is planned to eventually replace this guide with an in-game mission.)

You will immediately start on planet Hades, so watch out for lava first. Then, the first steps in this game will go like this:

  • Dig some stone with your pickaxe, dig ash with your hand
  • Search for some water (hint: moss)
  • Learn how to use the crafting guide in your inventory
  • Craft volcanic sand, then craft fertile sand
  • Place fertile sand next to water, wait for it to become dirt
  • Craft apple to apple seeds, plant it on dirt and watch it grow to a tree
  • Punch the tree trunk to get it, then craft wood
  • Use the crafting guide to proceed and discover new things

If you lost all your resources and tools, fight mutants at night to get some starter items.

A landscape of a volcanic planet. The sky is yellow, the land is covered in ash, has a ragged with many spike-shamed land features. Everything is surrounded by a large lava ocean.
A small plot of land with various vegetables and trees growing on a patch of dirt. The plants and leaves have a dry fall-like color. The land surrounding this place is barren, covered in ash. The sky is orange.
A structure built out of stone bricks was built at a tall stone mountain where lots of lava and water flows around. A few trees grow on the otherwise barren volcanic ash-covered landscape.
